METALION: The Slayer Mag Diaries & More...

Having read Slayer Mag years ago, I have to say it was one of the best underground black/death metal zines I'd ever come across. Needless to say, when I say Bazillion Points was working on releasing ALL OF THEM in one book I was beyond stoked, not just for myself, but for the 99% of people who had never heard of it to begin with. An absolute classic. If you've enjoyed OAKEN THRONE, SNAKEPIT, or MORBID TALES zines we've brought into the shop in the past, don't miss out on this. You'll file it alongside "Lords Of Chaos" and be glad you did.

Not to mention we have it for almost $10 less than the cover price!

Deluxe 744pp hardcover w/ 720pp b/w pages (over 600 reproductions from every issue of Slayer Mag), 100+ rare historical images, plus 8pp color insert from Slayer Mag Archives, plus 16pp color gallery of portraits by Jon Kristiansen
Dimensions: 8.5″ x 11″ x 2″; 5.5 lbs (2.5kg)
Forewords by Ian Christe, Tomas Lindberg, Chris Reifert, Fenriz, Stephen O’Malley, Erik Danielsson, and Tara G. Warrior

Empire Builder

It has been a little while since I went into Empire Guitars. To be totally honest, last time I was there it was still in the corner of the pawn shop. I was driving by the other day and decided to check out the new, expanded digs. At first I walked up to the front of the pawn shop thinking there was an internal entrance, but there was a printout on the window that directed me otherwise. Heading to the back of the building you  find, around the giant dumpster :( , a colorful mural letting you know that you are on the right track.

Walking in, I was sort of floored. The store is amazing.

Growing up, I always went to the guitar shops in NYC where there was the most unbelievable array of guitars. This was pre-Ebay. so all the shops had a minimum of 30 vintage (50s-70s) Les Pauls and even more Strats...and so on. I have not seen a store that had this vibe in many years. There is one in the outskirts of San Fran, another in Rochester...and a few others here and there...but not in Providence for certain.

The sheer quantity of quality and interesting amps and instruments is crazy. Now, although I bought a cheapo Epiphone SG at Empire a few years ago, this is not the bargain basement of guitars. you may not want to go there if you are shopping for a $50.00 beater.

Anyway, hopefully soon, Mike and the other folks at Empire will start posting gems up here on the front page.

Home Recording God Takes Machines With Magnets, Monday June 13

Ultimate showdown, or long due reconciliation of glossy modern Victorian fidelity with 1970's quasi-finished basement grit? YOU DECIDE! R. Stevie Moore, godfather of home recording and infamous recluse, is going on tour for the first time ever in his many decade career. Think Pet Sounds style uncomfortably positive vibes belied by some secret antisocial awkwardness bordering on the extreme. Am I right? Stevie will be backed/wooed onto the circuit by Brooklyners Tropical Ooze, and flanked by "middle name Avante" Lazy Magnet and Alec K. If you miss this you will be seriously disadvantaged re: head-bopping tunes and your own sense of just who you have to thank for that 4 track you made your parents split the cost of after you worked in the movie theater in the mall for 3 months in the midwest circa 1997. (Is this getting too personal?)

DEAD RIDER TONIGHT

The magic starts now, gang. Thursday May 12, this very night, D Rider gets up in it at Machines With Magnets. For those unfamiliar, this is the newest project from Todd Rittman of US Maple and Singer. Zing! I'm having a melt-down already. Rumor on the street is that it's some of the freakiest shit rock and roll fans have seen in a minute. Fanning the flames are Kokomo and OSS (will they bring a "very special guest"?). In summation:
