IN LIMBO: Noise Fest this Weekend
IN LIMBO: Noise Fest this Weekend
Among a slew of great shows this Friday and Saturday, starting at (believe it or not) 9pm both nights Paragon and Castlevania are teaming up to usher in their own funeral march. As another wave of spaces close their doors, this will be an opportunity to revel in the past year and a half of hyperactivity on the West Side. Come out and support the 20 out-of-town performers and over a dozen of local bands, some of which are having their first or final show in Providence. Whether you come early or come late, it should still be alive after anything else finishes.
This Friday & Saturday, November 18th-19th.

I've Got Good News, And Bad News
Which do you want first, team? The dark news is that "Guy Number 1" Art Middleton is leaving us for more temperate pastures in T-minus not that long, putting on hold not only a seemingly bottomless series of positive vibes, but also some of Providence's favorite bands. The good news is that, by way of consolation, he's put together a farewell Arcing show tonight with a dazzling array of Very Special Guests. Behold!

That's right. Photo Lottery is back in a big way. This September, AS220 PHOTO hosts the grand photo spectacular that brings together an dazzling array of photographic work from artists, teachers, young people and professional photographers back to Providence.
The 5th Biennial Photo Lottery helps support the Paul Krot Community Darkroom and the Mercantile Photo Lab, Rhode Island's only publicly accessible traditional black and white darkroom, digital photo lab and community lighting studio.
By donating work or purchasing a ticket to the Photo Lottery, you will help sustain and support this incredibly important resource and show your dedication to preserving the photographic arts and will help us continue to build community around the art and practice of photography.
So show us your shots and donate a print or step up to the ticket table and take a shot at winning one of over 150 photo-based artworks. This year we've already received original work from groundbreaker MARK MORRISROE and have acquired a silver gelatin print from a rare original negative of ELVIS PRESLEY from his army days!

METALION: The Slayer Mag Diaries & More...
Having read Slayer Mag years ago, I have to say it was one of the best underground black/death metal zines I'd ever come across. Needless to say, when I say Bazillion Points was working on releasing ALL OF THEM in one book I was beyond stoked, not just for myself, but for the 99% of people who had never heard of it to begin with. An absolute classic. If you've enjoyed OAKEN THRONE, SNAKEPIT, or MORBID TALES zines we've brought into the shop in the past, don't miss out on this. You'll file it alongside "Lords Of Chaos" and be glad you did.
Not to mention we have it for almost $10 less than the cover price!
Deluxe 744pp hardcover w/ 720pp b/w pages (over 600 reproductions from every issue of Slayer Mag), 100+ rare historical images, plus 8pp color insert from Slayer Mag Archives, plus 16pp color gallery of portraits by Jon Kristiansen
Dimensions: 8.5″ x 11″ x 2″; 5.5 lbs (2.5kg)
Forewords by Ian Christe, Tomas Lindberg, Chris Reifert, Fenriz, Stephen O’Malley, Erik Danielsson, and Tara G. Warrior
CALL FROM THE GRAVE Issue One
A new GREAT zine we got in this week. Absolutely great layout and content. Highly recommended. Interviews with Watain, Inquisition, Alcest, Ascension, Griftegard, MGLA, Necros Christos and tons more. 60 pages.

Empire Builder
It has been a little while since I went into Empire Guitars. To be totally honest, last time I was there it was still in the corner of the pawn shop. I was driving by the other day and decided to check out the new, expanded digs. At first I walked up to the front of the pawn shop thinking there was an internal entrance, but there was a printout on the window that directed me otherwise. Heading to the back of the building you find, around the giant dumpster :( , a colorful mural letting you know that you are on the right track.
Walking in, I was sort of floored. The store is amazing.
Growing up, I always went to the guitar shops in NYC where there was the most unbelievable array of guitars. This was pre-Ebay. so all the shops had a minimum of 30 vintage (50s-70s) Les Pauls and even more Strats...and so on. I have not seen a store that had this vibe in many years. There is one in the outskirts of San Fran, another in Rochester...and a few others here and there...but not in Providence for certain.
The sheer quantity of quality and interesting amps and instruments is crazy. Now, although I bought a cheapo Epiphone SG at Empire a few years ago, this is not the bargain basement of guitars. you may not want to go there if you are shopping for a $50.00 beater.
Anyway, hopefully soon, Mike and the other folks at Empire will start posting gems up here on the front page.

Home Recording God Takes Machines With Magnets, Monday June 13
Ultimate showdown, or long due reconciliation of glossy modern Victorian fidelity with 1970's quasi-finished basement grit? YOU DECIDE! R. Stevie Moore, godfather of home recording and infamous recluse, is going on tour for the first time ever in his many decade career. Think Pet Sounds style uncomfortably positive vibes belied by some secret antisocial awkwardness bordering on the extreme. Am I right? Stevie will be backed/wooed onto the circuit by Brooklyners Tropical Ooze, and flanked by "middle name Avante" Lazy Magnet and Alec K. If you miss this you will be seriously disadvantaged re: head-bopping tunes and your own sense of just who you have to thank for that 4 track you made your parents split the cost of after you worked in the movie theater in the mall for 3 months in the midwest circa 1997. (Is this getting too personal?)

On Record Store Day, I picked up this EARTH LP from Armageddon Shop. If you liked The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull record from 2008 then this is for you. It barely resembles older EARTH records though...just to warn those who have not heard their recent stuff.
Anyway, I really like it.

And now for something completely different
While browsing the Electro Harmonix website to see if they had any new crazy guitar effects coming out, I found this link on their page. It is this band Pomplamoose. Actually, the original link was just the dude (Jack Conte), but then I found more links for his "band" on youtube.
These two are adorable.
The basic deal is that he plays every instrument himself and videotapes everything. Then, he edits the video in a way that you can basically see him creating the song. The music is super sweet stuff ...kinda New Pornographers/Aisler Set/Moldy Peaches. Even if you hate the sound of that, you should watch just one of these.
-- EDIT: In some of the vids, the lady friend also plays instruments. I didnt see that in some of these until now. The ones I saw at first were all just him. --

Here is the first click I watched, which is more Elliot Smithy
And another with both of them:

LOTSOFNOISE benefit this Saturday!
I could really use your help. I am having a raffle at the show and could use some prizes. If you are interested in donating Records, CDs, Posters/Prints, Shirts, etc I would be so thankful. The only other benefit that I ever did was about 5 years ago and the raffle went over really well.
If you would like to donate, please drop donations at Armageddon Providence. They are kind enough to be letting me use the shop as a hub for local folks.
If you know anyone that might be interested in helping in this way, please forward this along.
Oh... and COME TO THE SHOW!

DOMINGO GIGANTE
In a long awaited excuse to grace Providence with another "I'll top my own Evil best" Lee Buford poster, Machines With Magnets is blowing it up this Sunday with a Best Friends From Near and Far original dude-stravaganza. Git it in for The Body kind-of tour kickoff, second debut of still pretty new Deleted Arrows line-up, I-still-haven't-seen-these-guys-but-thanks-Rich-for-making-my-band-look-awesome Mouth of Flowers, "Worcester Knows How To Party" bros Mountain Man, "In it for life" Soul Control, and the source of all things melodious/dark and immersive/corn-syrup fueled in MWM studios for the past week, Braveyoung. These dudes have been in The Bucket working on a Body collab, and we can't say enough good things about them. Technical proficiency! Hardcore ideals! Southern charm! Sorry ladies- they're taken! Real Live Early o'clock. No more bitching about how it's too cold to get out there. See you in hell!
