Sweet Theives and Tiny Hawks

I recently got both the Sweet Thieves' "View From A Glass Tower" and Tiny Hawks' "People With Out End". They are both really good in totally different ways. Reviews will be up soon...but you should probably cut to the chase and go buy them now.

Thanks...and Thanks.

So, Sasha (Volunteer Extraordinaire) is ending her stint with Lotsofnoise so that she can focus on bringing noise to folks everywhere. A gigantic thanks to her for all of her help on the site.

Also, Samantha (Potential Volunteer Extraordinaire) is now helping me out with the listings in Sasha's stead. New listings are already up and things are going swimmingly. Big thanks to Samantha too.

Yup.

PLEASE repost your listing

If you have posted a listing in the past week and do not see it up on the calendar, please repost it. We are switching people around and there was a short stint where I think posts are lost. PLEASE REPOST and we will get it up on the calendar.

Rollerderby Rocks

I went downtown to see the Providence Rollerderby on Sunday. Man, it was so fun. The women were super good at the sport and it made for a great night. The weather was pretty perfect too. It is awesome to have some interesting stuff to do Downtown. Whenever something like that happens and is successful it gives me high hopes for downtown-proper. I remember it used to be a ghost town down there on the weekends.

Forums NOT Upgraded

Crap...i had it all working and then something went wrong. The old forums are back up for now.

Oldies

Shit. So, a couple of things have become clear to me recently.

a) I hate the radio but I forgot my mp3 player so I was listening to B101 for like 5 minutes today. B101 is "the oldies station". In the 5 minutes that I listened, I heard the Police, The Romantics and Blondie. Now, when I came to Providence in 1989, B101 was all Bill Haley and the Comets, Nat King Cole and Peter Paul and Mary. It seems like New Wave is now "oldies".

b) When MTV and VH1 first aired, all my friends made fun of VH1 as being the "adult, easy listening" channel. Now, VH1 is having "The Month Of Metal" programming. I told my co-worker, "Hey, remember how when we were kids we thought VH1 was all old and lame? Now they have the Month Of Metal and stuff...". He said, "kids still think VH1 is old and lame". Shit, now Slayer and Megadeth are "oldies".

c) In 1994 I started teaching college classes. I was very young, so my students were my peers. I would reference things like Devo and Atari and everyone got it. Now my students have no idea who Devo is and all pop culture video references today date back to Nintendo and stop there. Erg. Oldies.

T H A N K Y O U

Hey everyone. The show was a big success. The bands were amazing and thanks to all of you LOTSOFNOISE.com will now be paid-in-ful for 2 years. That is a really big deal and I totally appreciate it. Having the site be locally supported is evidence that Providence rocks and so do the folks that live here. Thanks.

and more thanks to:
  • Sasha, for helping plan the whole night
  • Made In Mexico, Tiny Hawks, Unprotected Sects and Work/Death, for playing
  • Nice Slice, Tinyshowcase.com, Julians, White Electric, As220, Load, Corleone and the artists that supplied us with raffle giveaways.
  • 39 Troy, for letting us use the space
  • All of the folks that volunteered..making popcorn, selling tickets, moving stuff...
If anyone took photos, please let me know, or just post them to the lotsofnoise gallery.

LOTSOFNOISE Benefit Show TONIGHT!

TONIGHT, SATURDAY APRIL 29, 9PM.
LOTSOFNOISE BENEFIT SHOW!
Hi everyone. So, a month or so ago I was mentioning that the reasons LOTSOFNOISE kept going down were partially due to the fact that the site is so large that it costs a ton to keep up. I really try to keep LON ad free and have done so for years...but the hit on my wallet is just too large. Many of you have volunteered in one for or another and that is rad. Here is the biggie though. We are having a benefit show this week and we hope you will come. All proceeds go into keeping the site alive and kicking. My guess is that this one event will keep LON going for 1-2 years:

the line-up:

Made in Mexico
Tiny Hawks
Work/Death
Unprotected Sects
(debut performance of musical theater by Dirt Palace ladies Xander and Sasha w/ Ali from Dreamhouse)
...and a carnival!

-games with prizes donated by local business, artists and musicians (So far we have stuff/confimations from White Electric, Julian's, As220, Load, Corleone, Matt Brinkman, Nice Slice and more).
-continuous screenings all night of the Intensylvania Collective's new basement horror movie series
-gruesome face/body painting booth courtesy of Merrydeath
-stiltwalkers! popcorn!

Thanks a ton to Sasha for coordinating everything. Come out and keep LOTSOFNOISE running--Help us stay community (not advertising) supported!
