This May 30th, AS220 once again presents the Photo Lottery! This is the fourth exciting event in this successful series of biennial fundraisers for Rhode Island's only public darkrooms.
We have gathered together one hundred and fifty pieces photo-based artwork from students, amateurs, youth, working professionals, photo journalists, and legendary international photographers. This is a one-night-only event bringing together artists, collectors, supporters and onlookers for a salon style exhibition that pays full tribute to the diversity of work being done in the photographic medium. Each $100 ticket is guaranteed to win a piece from this amazing array and to sweeten the pot, winners have the privilege of taking their artwork home the very same evening. The Photo Lottery generates significant resources for the Paul Krot Darkroom & photo programming at AS220, helping us to continue to bring you inexpensive classes (that employ local artists as instructors), low and no-cost facilities and equipment rentals, monthly free events to grow artistic community, and free photography classes and professional development for youth ages 15-21 through AS220's Broad Street Studio.
In the spirit of community, and since this exhibit is on view for just one wonderful evening, we encourage everyone to attend the Photo Lottery celebration free of charge. If you wish to buy a ticket, this year we have made it very convenient to do so; tickets are available at the AS220 bar, online through Brown Paper tickets (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/63945 ) and Facebook's EventPal, or by contacting us directly at the AS220 darkrooms or our main office.
Buying a ticket to win an artwork can be thought of as a donation or a very sound investment. This year we are thrilled to announce donations from Jock Sturges, Henry Horenstein, Mona Kuhn and Danny Lyon! Jock Sturges, a large-format photographer famous for his controversial nude portraiture has donated a framed 50"x40" panorama to the Paul Krot Darkrooms Lottery. This enormous piece, features a tiny nude, embedded in an incredibly lush and colorful forest landscape. His work is in the collections of major institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; The Frankfurt Museum of Modern Art; and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His work is published in numerous monographs. We also have a donation from Danny Lyon. Famous for his stunning works in "New Journalism", Lyon has had solo exhibits at such prestigious institutions as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. For this event, we have received an 8"x10" modern print of "Cowboy and Sparky", a 1966 photograph from the Bikeriders series, a print which usually garners prices around $4500.
