AS220 Photo Lottery

Fourth Biennial Photo Lottery 2009: a benefit for the Paul Krot Community Darkrooms at AS220

Saturday, May 30th 2009 6-9 pm

AS220 Main Gallery / Performance Space
115 Empire Street
Providence RI 02903

This May 30th, AS220 once again presents the Photo Lottery! This is the fourth exciting event in this successful series of biennial fundraisers for Rhode Island's only public darkrooms.

We have gathered together one hundred and fifty pieces photo-based artwork from students, amateurs, youth, working professionals, photo journalists, and legendary international photographers. This is a one-night-only event bringing together artists, collectors, supporters and onlookers for a salon style exhibition that pays full tribute to the diversity of work being done in the photographic medium. Each $100 ticket is guaranteed to win a piece from this amazing array and to sweeten the pot, winners have the privilege of taking their artwork home the very same evening. The Photo Lottery generates significant resources for the Paul Krot Darkroom & photo programming at AS220, helping us to continue to bring you inexpensive classes (that employ local artists as instructors), low and no-cost facilities and equipment rentals, monthly free events to grow artistic community, and free photography classes and professional development for youth ages 15-21 through AS220's Broad Street Studio.

In the spirit of community, and since this exhibit is on view for just one wonderful evening, we encourage everyone to attend the Photo Lottery celebration free of charge. If you wish to buy a ticket, this year we have made it very convenient to do so; tickets are available at the AS220 bar, online through Brown Paper tickets (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/63945) and Facebook's EventPal, or by contacting us directly at the AS220 darkrooms or our main office.

Buying a ticket to win an artwork can be thought of as a donation or a very sound investment. This year we are thrilled to announce donations from Jock Sturges, Henry Horenstein, Mona Kuhn and Danny Lyon! Jock Sturges, a large-format photographer famous for his controversial nude portraiture has donated a framed 50"x40" panorama to the Paul Krot Darkrooms Lottery. This enormous piece, features a tiny nude, embedded in an incredibly lush and colorful forest landscape. His work is in the collections of major institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; The Frankfurt Museum of Modern Art; and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His work is published in numerous monographs. We also have a donation from Danny Lyon. Famous for his stunning works in "New Journalism", Lyon has had solo exhibits at such prestigious institutions as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. For this event, we have received an 8"x10" modern print of "Cowboy and Sparky", a 1966 photograph from the Bikeriders series, a print which usually garners prices around $4500.

Stereo Discount Center sale part 2

I went by today and already used turntables and amps were starting to pile up. Here are some crappy iPhone pics and new info from Stuart at SDC:

It's gonna be records (most between $1-$3 though Dave might bring some gems) and all used gear in stock 1/2 price. We have a few really good amps, a lot of turntables (around 20, most with cartridges) only a few cassette decks, a few EQs and signal processors and lots of receivers. I will have new speakers on sale for 20% off.

Support your local stores! 10-5 Sunday the 24th (today).

And now:

Oh...and look at the insane 120hz LED TV playing blue ray when you get there. It blew my mind.

Providence Band Aid 3: Saturday May 16th

Mark Elliott, long time Providence resident, and former NEWSPEAK Bookstore alumni, requested our help to raise some needed funds to pay for help pay for his cancer medication. His health insurance has been giving him problems, and he's finding it next to impossible to afford the medicine that he needs to live. Needless to say, here is a chance to help someone in real need, who's been a positive part of this town. Both myself and Bob have lost close family members to cancer, and we feel this is an important and worthwhile event.

If you want to donate, but cannot attend, you can Paypal a donation to:
armageddondaynow@hotmail.com

Please put in the notes: Donation For Mark Elliott Benefit
All donations will go directly to him, and thanks for helping him out.
If you want to drop off a donation in person you can stop by Armageddon Shop, and we will make sure that it gets where it needs to go.

We still need Raffle prize donations as well, they can be dropped off at Armageddon anytime up to the show. If it's too difficult to make it to the shop or hook up with myself or Bob beforehand, how about letting us know you'll bring something, then just bring it to the show. It would be nice to have a full list ahead of time with the prizes so folks know what they may win.

Let's do this, we need your participation.

Records, CD's, tapes, shirts, books, zines, posters, handmade goods, art, gift certificates... pretty much anything would be welcome.

We've done some pretty good benefits over the years, and we need and appreciate everyone's participation. Mark appreciates the help as well. Don't slack if you have the possibility to donate something at all, please do.

This is about community, and our ability to help each other out when it's needed the most.
