Among a slew of great shows this Friday and Saturday, starting at (believe it or not) 9pm both nights Paragon and Castlevania are teaming up to usher in their own funeral march. As another wave of spaces close their doors, this will be an opportunity to revel in the past year and a half of hyperactivity on the West Side. It has been a little while since I went into Empire Guitars. To be totally honest, last time I was there it was still in the corner of the pawn shop. I was driving by the other day and decided to check out the new, expanded digs. At first I walked up to the front of the pawn shop thinking there was an internal entrance, but there was a printout on the window that directed me otherwise. Heading to the back of the building you find, around the giant dumpster :( , a colorful mural letting you know that you are on the right track.

Walking in, I was sort of floored. The store is amazing.

Growing up, I always went to the guitar shops in NYC where there was the most unbelievable array of guitars. This was pre-Ebay. so all the shops had a minimum of 30 vintage (50s-70s) Les Pauls and even more Strats...and so on. I have not seen a store that had this vibe in many years. There is one in the outskirts of San Fran, another in Rochester...and a few others here and there...but not in Providence for certain.

The sheer quantity of quality and interesting amps and instruments is crazy. Now, although I bought a cheapo Epiphone SG at Empire a few years ago, this is not the bargain basement of guitars. you may not want to go there if you are shopping for a $50.00 beater.

Anyway, hopefully soon, Mike and the other folks at Empire will start posting gems up here on the front page.

While browsing the Electro Harmonix website to see if they had any new crazy guitar effects coming out, I found this link on their page. It is this band Pomplamoose. Actually, the original link was just the dude (Jack Conte), but then I found more links for his "band" on youtube.

These two are adorable.

The basic deal is that he plays every instrument himself and videotapes everything. Then, he edits the video in a way that you can basically see him creating the song. The music is super sweet stuff ...kinda New Pornographers/Aisler Set/Moldy Peaches. Even if you hate the sound of that, you should watch just one of these.

My goal is to hire a programmer/developer to do some serious integration of social networking, allow for ease of use for users, create a better calendar and build ways for LON to email/text/etc people when shit is going down that they want to see/hear.

This show is based on Tuesday Terrs, a zine project started by Natalja that the artists have been collaborating on for the last year. You'll recognize Mickey's style from her immaculately printed, oft sexually themed, and quasi-illegible posters from around town, and Natalja from Querent, Hotbox, and every other great band the world has ever known. Their pairing has resulted in, in Zachilli's own words, "a big fucking sick ass mess," as well as the band Bloodhuff. They're promising snacks, booze, and high-fives in AS220's project space (the one next to Local 121) this Sunday from 4-7pm. Pick up all 14 of their terrs, then head on down to the Rock n Roll yard sale.

I had to split my time between both of these things, seeing only Ming Toro and OSS in the Bucket and then running to the AS220 Print Lottery. Both were really fun. The sound at Rocktucket was really good, as was the food (Taco truck...Cupcake truck...Vegan ice cream truck).

At AS220, my lottery ticket produced a dragon silkscreen print which was quickly scooped up in a trade where I wound up walking away with a Black Pus/Greenlee poster. Go Figure :)

On exhibit at AS220's Main Gallery at 115 Empire Street throughout September, 200 prints and works on paper hang in a massive, exuberant, salon-style showcase of work from a exceptionally diverse spectrum of artists. 200 tickets are available for the chance to draw a number at random and take home the correlating piece from 200 works on display.This is the second of the Shop's biennial fundraiser; the first Print Lottery in 2008 was highly successful, attracting donations from artists and printmakers from all over the country and drawing over three hundred people to Empire Street for the culminating lottery event.

A $100 donation to AS220's Printshop is rewarded with a lottery ticket putting supporters in the running for a number of valuable works of original art, including pieces by Providence print pioneers Brian Chippendale, Xander Marro, Dan Wood, Meredith Stern, Jung Il Hong and Pippi Zornoza or one of the two sold out limited edition Shepard Fairey Providence Industrial prints that were commissioned to commemorate AS220's 25th anniversary and launch of the Free Culture Award. The fundraising exhibition also includes a print published by Rhode Island School of Designs printmaking department by artist Michael Krueger, Professor of Art at the University of Kansas, a piece from Philadelphia artist, printmaker and 2010 Guggenheim Fellow, Daniel Heyman and work by Rhode Island School of Design printmaking faculty Brain Shure and Cornelia McSheehy. As you might expect from this always unjuried organization, creations from well-known artists hang side by side with contributions from local students and members of AS220's own Youth Studio. In the same egalitarian spirit, all of the 200 artworks are sold by way of a lottery drawing.

The culminating event on Saturday, September 25th at AS220's Gallery & Performance Space is part of a month long celebration of Printmaking organized by the Community Printshop, which included lectures by prominent artists and free public printmaking workshops. 2010 program guests included Curator Lauren Hinkson from the Guggenhiem and local creators Dan Wood, Alec Thibodeau, Pippi Zornoza and the founders of Tiny Showcase as well as special events including a formal open house for the Shop and a free workshop on printmaking basics.
Three years ago, a dedicated core of about 20 members began the AS220 Community Print Shop as an effort to develop a shared, accessible resource for printmaking in Providence. The shop built worktables, installed sinks, crafted light safe cabinets, stacked type cases and welcomed presses that may have otherwise been left to rust or gather dust to AS220's historic Dreyfus building. Since September 2007, the Printshop functioned as an incredible incubator as systems for offering affordable classes, reserving press time, training monitors, publishing print editions and hosting artists in residence quickly began to take shape. AS220's Printshop has introduced over 800 people to printmaking through a strong roster of small monthly workshops; the facilities have seen more than 9,000 active hours by over 200 Shop members. In Autumn 2010 the Community Printshop will relocate to the newly renovated Mercantile block where it will quadruple its size and unveil its new centerpiece: a massive, never-before-used Takach intaglio etching press with a 4.5’ x 12’ press bed donated to the organization by the Rhode Island School of Design. In the expanded space, the Printshop will provide access to traditional stone lithography and expand screen-printing, letterpress, and offset printing facilities.
People directly support the Printshop's continued success by purchasing a Lottery Ticket for $100; proceeds help to maintain and purchase equipment, support a full-time manager, replenish shop supplies and facilitate free and inexpensive programming during this year and the next.

ALEXANDER BARTON & ADAM ANAGNOSTIS

Alexander Barton and Adam Anagnostis join forces in a genre-bending artistic collaboration.

COMEX OR BECAMUS will be debuting at Machines With Magnets on Saturday, August 28th 2010. Barton, a RISD graduate, and Anagnostis, a URI graduate, have spent the last year and a half constructing COMEX OR BECAMUS, a large-scale multimedia art installation and literary publication. This collaboration represents the Providence artists’ ambition, criticism, and overwhelming search for truth.

Barton’s meticulously constructed installation consisting of eleven oil paintings and fundamental geometric elements melds with Anagnostis’ aphoristic written landscapes in a 13-square-foot, 40-page arc of hypnotic aggression, conflict, and beauty. Coupling the visual with the written, the artists offer a complementary dialogue that intends to challenge and antagonize the audience. Having lived and studied together in Providence as undergraduates, Barton and Anagnostis elaborated upon their shared musical, philosophical, and cultural constellations in this collaborative effort.

Presenting the work at Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket (Rhode Island’s City of the Future), and with the book being published locally, Barton and Anagnostis have proudly produced a cultural artifact representative of these places. Through the use of icons and wit, COMEX OR BECAMUS pays homage to a culture that has been integral to the artists’ experience and the projects’ formation. The artists seek to posit COMEX OR BECAMUS as a refreshingly destructive force, inspiring a chagrined attraction.

The opening reception will be further complemented by the uniquely inspired sounds of Geoff Mullen and Steven Vallot and others, along with stimulating beverages.

I don't know if anybody else is still riding the ESG/Dropdead/Megasus/nachos from Julian's high from last weekend, but if I don't find a way to keep chasing that dragon, there's going to be hell to pay, stat. Saturday=surprise lineup. I can't 100% promise anyone jumping out of a cake, but I can promise Zulu Lulu, Infinite Children, Octopus Triangle, and AcoustiYah. Acoustic Middle Eastern Indie Rock! Prog Trios! Git it! Sunday hosts my all time favorite genre: technically proficient avante-electro ambient spin-off jazz house. Yes! Put your hands together for Mongo, Egg Brains, The Bygones, and Dan Liparini. Hey, did you guys know that there's life drawing every Tuesday? True story. 6-8:30. Bring your own supplies and six little dollars, and stick around afterward this week for Glowkid, S.O.S, and Callus Black. This Thursday Providence Poetry Slam is also hosting a writers workshop upstairs at 7, and, ok get this, later that night, a show close to my heart: Like a terrifying bird of prey hardwired to kill then inexplicably adopted as the symbol of a theoretically benevolent nation, Purple Rhinestone Eagle swoops in, talons resplendent in the myriad rays of a mirror ball, like so many feather embellished, jewel encrusted classic rock revivals. Party! Hot on their tails are Bellows, Whore Paint, and Providence's newest redefinition of lo-fi with style, Cave Girls. Count me in.

The Body, a two-man band from Providence, R.I., has released a new record.

The Body

The Body is a two-man, highly conceptual, sort of extreme metal, sort of noise band from Providence, R.I. It has made one of the best introductions for an album I’ve heard in years. The album is “All the Waters of the Earth Turn to Blood,” recently released on the label At a Loss. The first track, “A Body,” begins with seven minutes of choral music, sung by the Assembly of Light Women’s Choir. Then a short, disturbing whistling noise signals a change, and whump: a grind of jaw-rattling guitar and drums throw in for the last two minutes. As the record continues, the beating just doesn’t stop. The choral voices, returning here and there, are the only ray of hope: the Body’s own singing amounts to weedy, apocalyptic howls, barely clearing the din of their processional stomps. It’s an experience, this record, written in big riffs and celestial choirs and digital static. It puts you in a very strange space, spiritual and dirty and wary.

My life is a Cathy meets Dilbert meets Metalocalypse cartoon. Thank god this is going to culminate into its apex soon- the madness has to end sometime. OR DOES IT?!

Saddle up tonight for an ever-festive B Sharp situation: MOGA will be celebrating their cd release, and we're rolling out the red carpet. Sunday night gets metalcore, but ain't too cool to dance, with Divets, No One and The Somebodies, Turbosleaze, and Private Public. What does that even mean?!?! Daniel Chase is going to cool things out mellow groove style on Tuesday alongside The Tower & The Fool and The Rachels. I'll be real, readers. If the tsunami-like spiral out of madness has already begun, Wednesday night is giving me cause for concern: Ceremony is coming though town, and I heard a rumor about mesh tops being involved. Is that punk? Soul Control, Vaccine, and a little outfit called Wet Friend have personally assured me that this will be one of the most disgusting nights of my life. (You've obviously forgotten Freedom Winter 99!) Ok, and here's where it really gets wild: Friday evening we are basking in the warm glow of Shepard Fairey, who will be here at 5 screening his short-but-not-too-short Andre The Giant Has A Posse, as well as sitting on a panel for a very special Action Speaks alongside Bert Crenca, pioneer of free culture activism and scholarship Lawrence Lessig, and our very own resident super genius/wizard of computer engineering/conceiver and fabricator of magic/all around cool guy Brandon Edens. It's free of charge, and might actually change your life. Who loves open source software? This guy!

Top of the morning, readers, and welcome to another 7 days of untold wonders at AS220. The weather has turned from oppressive to balmy. The birds are singing in the trees. I caught a Godzilla marathon on cable last night. What more could we ask for?

Tonight brings the noise with Academia, The Royalty, Tens of Thousands, and The Universe. It's indie! It's glam! It's garage! Saturday's show has been moved to the stratosphere: The Concord Ballet Orchestra Players, Goliath, Something like Banter & the Cybernetic Inevitable All-Stars, and The Invisible Hours promise to live up to their reputation as Theremin wielding, fuzz echoing, fire-starting ambient psychedelia. This Sunday is the first of the month. If you thought payday was good, wait till you catch the Empire Review. Wednesday at 5:30, for absolutely zero dollars, hackers unite at DC401. Apologies, readers. Far be it from me to sound a false alarm, but it's getting so hot down here at AS220 I was starting to get concerned. Lord knows, if the fiery sensuality of this week's events so much as singed any of our beloved patrons, I would never be able to forgive myself. Entrusted with the knowledge of our upcoming happenings, it would be flippant and careless of me to bear this load alone, all the while knowing I could have done something to prevent a mishap. It's the cross I bear, readers: being weighted down with this veritable furnace of information. I can't take it anymore. Put on your fire-retardant jumpsuit; we're going in.

It's only a couple of hours until the madness begins to unfold. Tailor your pants, lovers: Makeupbreakup, The Press, The Brother Kite, and Cellar Doves take the stage in t-minus. Shake it! Saturday night is riddled with your Auntie Reba's all time favorite genre: Canadian! Suuns and Parlovr trek down south to grace us with their presence. Don't you mock me with your bacon! Minky Starshine will jack us up with some jams that I understand to be somewhere between ELO and the Kinks, and it looks like I'll finally get to see Ming Toro. If it's cool by Pelletier, it's cool by me. Sunday night is going to get disgusting, as Rampant Decay, Brain Shivers, Suzi Trash, and Immaculate: Grotesque show us what their band names are all about. I can't resist an Arkansan. Tuesday marks an always torrid extravaganza courtesy of Tor Johnson starring White Problems from Milwaukee, but the fun doesn't end there! Wednesday night is gonna get wild, team. Real wild... Grass Widow is coming in all the way from San Frisco, and I couldn't be more psyched. Remember what happened last time they were in town? Ok, its a little fuzzy, but this time we're hell-bent on making some memories. "My new favorites" and AS2000 all-stars Blood Huff are starting the night, and have committed to ensuring that something horrifying and uncomfortable happens before 9:45. I've got my eye on you, Zacchhiillii! It all culminates in me getting canned for having some sort of inappropriate celebrity meltdown, cause this night is headed up by The Avengers. "Not the unwed teen mothers of punk rock!?" you may be screaming aloud in your own mind. Yes, the very same. Sorry guys. If your favorite events emails come to an abrupt halt after this show, you know why. After that is the sickest Armageddon show yet to date, but you'll have to wait until next week for details. Ha! Or, check the calendar. I never was good at secrets.

Champagne Wishes and Rock n Roll Dreams: Your Week at AS220

Break it on down, readers! I hope everyone's week is as filled with Rock and Roll as mine has been. More on that in a moment, but first, a Cosmo-esque quiz to test your status in relation to the Devil's Music. Shall we begin?

If you answered mostly A, you should seriously consider making an appearance at the dazzling array of shows at AS220 this week. Mostly B, and you are veritably obligated to do so. C... for the love of all things holy, get down here. Ted Nugent? Really? You should be ashamed of yourself. Though big ups on the Coachwhips. I'll give you points for that one.

Armageddon is nigh, for later this very night Soul Control, Voetsek, Lifers, and Dios Mio will take the stage. Dark! Friday night may well be the moment you've all been waiting for, in more ways than one. From 7-8pm, we'll bask in the kaleidoscopic magic that is the Girls Rock Camp Showcase. 30 gals age 11-18 have spent the week picking up instruments (many for the first time ever), forming bands, writing songs, designing and screenprinting t-shirts, making zines, and generally living the Rock and Roll lifestyle. They'll unveil their songs right here on the AS220 stage; come on down to see what they've been up to, and to support what Girls Rock is all about: making sure that everyone has access to community, self-assurity, high-fives, and killer jams. Even ladies! Who can't get on board with that?! Nobody, thats who. The good times don't end there: Saturday night, we've got The Down and Outs, Jesuscentric, and The New Warden lined up alongside The Jesse Minute. Saturday holds, as per the usual, a riveting Irish Music Session in the afternoon (Tepid Guinness! I'll take two!) followed by an indie-math Pitchfork-darling studded extravaganza starring People of Color, Yellow Fever, Whitey, and 14foot1. Wednesday the 14th, Providence Geeks carry on the monthly tradition of Geek Dinner. Join us at 5:30 to, in their own words, help Rhode Island's digital innovators connect, collaborate, and ultimately make the City-State and its geeks info-technology leaders. Or just pick up programmers. Zing! Put a ring on it. Stick around for Royal Jelly, Grids, So Cow, and Panther Moderns. So Cow hails all the way from picturesque "land of the green" Ireland, and has been described on the internet as something meets something meets ABBA. SOLD!!!! You had me "It's so different from the world I'm living in; tired of TV." Thursday takes a hard left onto Hardcore Ave with Soul Control, Voetsek, Coss Examination, and Dios Mio. Thanks, Armageddon! Has anybody seen my backpatch? Friday evening, team... are you ready for this? Friday evening we are both psyched honored to be hosting the Girls Rock Rhode Island camp showcase. Gals age 11-18 will have spent the week learning to play instruments, forming bands, silkscreening shwag, writing songs, and all around being awesome. If anybody out there believes that arts education is a must have, that music carries with a transformative power, that feminism probably shouldn't be dead, or that Rock n Roll does in fact soothe the soul, get your grass down here from 7-8pm to cheer these bands on at their first show ever, though probably not their last. New England's leading Christian Metal band The Body is gearing up to go on tour, and their subs have never sounded better. For the love of all things holy, someone bake those guys some non-perishables. Favorite art guy around town Jacob BroRendez has been seen spreading gossip like a madman, but somehow still seems to have more friends than anyone I know. Is it his looks? His charm? His raw talent? I want lessons, J-Bro!

Now that we're all on the same page: Friday night features an excellent as ever curation by great dudes and gear-fixing-wizards B Sharp: The Benedictions, The Silks, and OK FY Radio are on the horn to start your weekend right. You're gonna need it, readers. Do I even need to mention? Risen from the dead like so many post-apocalyptic no-wave noise rock zombies, Providence royalty of yesteryear and tomorrow Arab on Radar return this Saturday to remind you of how you lost your hearing in the 90s, and why it was all worth it. Well team, you asked for it. The dog days of summer are early and upon us, and don't show any sign of letting up. While all winter long in huddled masses we pined for these damp and scorching environs, we find ourselves now wilting across our beloved downcity, planning our days around bubble tea and air conditioning. Oh man, but Boba House closes at 10! Where could I possibly find air conditioning after.... Whats that? Ohhhhh.....

This very night we've but one spot left in our "very special" darkroom class featuring Denny Moers, and Blossom. Denny's unique practices lend themselves to surreal and somewhat unpredictable results. To snag the last remaining spot, run on over to as220.org/darkroom. Now git! Friday night features an acoustic spectacular via the musical memoir of Andy Shernoff. Yes, of the Dictators and the Ramones. Too bizarre to be true, you say? Try and prove me wrong! Saturday brings a jam-tacular lineup of hip-hop all stars including Big Rush, Dread Mighty, Manni Headphonez, and Hidden Agenda. What did ESG tell us to do? No, not "flush you like a toilet." Dance! This Sunday will be your last chance to check out the literary phenomenon thats been sweeping the city: Bar Plays will take over our humble pub at starting at 7pm. (You might even get to throw the word "thespian" into a conversation. Who else can offer you that?) They'll get the boot at 9 when Stalemate, Roz Raskin & The Ricecakes, and Tonic Thief take the stage. I'm gonna spend the next couple of days sleeping it off, and you should too, readers. Tuesday night marks the kind of epic descent into madness I know you've all been waiting for. It pains me even to trivialize this bill by typing it; the internet could never do it justice. Hello hello, readers! Welcome to a very special Father's Day edition of Your Weekly Events Email. In this issue we will be discussing Great Gifts for Dad, as well as featuring two short editorials, Guess What About Technology and I Cannot Believe My Father Still Asks Me This. I know that some of these topics have been weighing on your mind, readers, and I'm here to offer some relief. Without further ado: Fathers day is June 20, or so the internet tells me, and many of us still have yet to wrastle up an appropriate gift for the paterfamilias. Try these on for size: Get dad out of the house for a fun outing to Beyond The Lighted Stage, the new documentary about Ontario's most legendary progressive rock sensation. Everybody loves Rush, even if they don't know it yet. If material luxuries are your dad's bag, consider a pair of custom designed cowboy boots. Rugged! Utilitarian! Man Town! If all else fails, go with my old standby, pickled herring. Moving on: Hey guys, guess what about technology? Did you know that BMI owns the technology called Shazam? The one where you hold your cell phone up to some musics, and it tells you what song it is? What on earth could they have wanted that capability for? Oooooh, do you think that when you Shazam something, BMI knows? I'm only leaving the house wrapped in aluminum foil from now on. In other news, I went to visit the fam last week, and I Cannot Believe My Father Still Asks Me if I've considered paying for health insurance, or if I'm planning on getting married any time soon. Ok ok, to be fair, that last one was my mother, but still. Get it together, Mitchells. Its the 90's.

Friday night promises a host of hackers and noisemakers so esoteric you'll find yourself in some kind of kaleidoscopic underwater transcendental hypnotic state. Area C provides loops and drones, Myo hacks into contact mics, Jeff Carey real-time multi-channels electro instrumental tunes, and Blevin Blectum casts some sort of Siren/muse/immersive trance curse. Dreamy! Saturday proves to be equally avante, with Screwed Anthologies, Aster, (R)octopus, and ^. Think spandex, improv, audio-visuals, and performance art. Where have you been all my life?! Sunday we'll be drinking as per the usual, but this time to the soothing literary stylings of Bar Plays: Plays Set In Bars Done In Bars. If you haven't seen these yet, you're probably not a raging alcoholic. Keep up the good work! Dark days, team. First Ronnie James Dio, then Gary Coleman, and now, of all your Auntie Reba's mentors and heroes, Rue McClanahan. Lets take a moment for a "Very Special Segment" I like to call True About Rue:

1) Eddi-Rue MacClanahan was born in Oklahoma, the very home of your favorite events informer.

2) Rue was God Dang Vegan, if you can believe it, because she was gentle and loving to all things, unlike her morally-swayable-in-the-face-of-lust character on the Golden Girls.

3) Rue was married 6 times, which lent itself to, as far as I'm concerned, the best named memoir of all time, "My First Five Husbands, and The One That Got Away," in this case, referring to a separation rather than divorce, or some other unforeseeable and disastrous fate.

I've found a reason to be good, readers. If the good Lord's got her and Tammy Faye together up in the Penthouse for Jesus, then I'm leaving selfishness and sin behind. But first... perhaps some kind of last hurrah? What kind of fleeting debauchery could our Savior forgive? I've got a couple of ideas:

Friday night marks the moment we've all been waiting for: Armageddon Night! Not an eternal hereafter full of flames, people, but an expertly curated shred fest: Cough (VA), Neon Bitches, Elder, and Worlds Burn To Death (TX) set the stage for Slang, in all the way from Japan. Give 'em a warm welcome. The following eve promises a black metal/thrash/crust hybrid so disgusting its sure to condemn, with Grave Reviews, Black Vendetta, P.S.S., and Reign of Abaddon sharing the stage. Now, Mondays we usually take the night off and go to the bingo hall, but just this week we're opening our doors and our whiskey bottles for Bar Plays, plays set in bars done in bars. You know you were wishing for a drink the whole time anyway, sooo..... Wednesday ain't the Lord's day yet, so I'm coming down for Methuselah, ORCumentary, and Lobotomizer. Its stoner! Its doom! Its everything you ever wanted. I'm cleaning up my act, and this show is my bachelor party. I can't be held accountable for what happens; by Saturday morning I'll have washed it all away.

Rise n shine it, readers. The sun is out, the times are good, and the game is on. How could I find an ounce of dissatisfaction amongst a group of subscribers so palpably filled with vim and vigor? For what more could so high a concentration of ever-contented individuals possibly ask? I haven't heard any complaints yet. If I did, I'd just shush them up with a little mud and a few hairballs, the old fashioned way. Tried and true, works every time. If it ain't broke... you know what they say. Now where were we?

This Friday night promises one of our favorite noisy neighbors, B Sharp Music, presenting for your auditory enjoyment both You Scream I Scream and Eolune. Saturday, as per the staggeringly awesome yet usual, kicks off with an Irish Music Session in the bar. Later that night, Vudu Bevy, The Denver Boot, and November Calling provide the banjo-noodling soundtrack to your otherwise Rock n Roll lifestyle. Spice of Life! Count me in. Sundays got me quaking in my boots, people. I don't know that I can handle this much excitement; I've never tried. The day kicks off at 1 pm with an absolutely free of charge open house of our brand new Mercantile Block. Now, not all is up and running just yet, but the fabulous residential studios, soon-to-be Printshop and Labs, and plush practice spaces are starting to take shape. Plus, The Stable is open downstairs. Try and resist! I dare you! Starting at 4, our June gallery exhibitions will be unveiled. I'm no connoisseur, but one Serena JVE has spent the past three days logging in the Project Space, threatening something about a "room within a room," and throwing up hyper-insulated electric orange tarps. If this doesn't result in art, I don't know what will. Don't leave downtown just yet, art-goers. Its the first of the month, and you know what that means. The Empire Review, at sharply 8pm, will remind us what it was like to accidentally stumble across some steamy scene on cable TV while lounging in the den with your parents, age 8. Uncomfortable, yet somehow foreshadowing of the quasi-appropriate humorist your inner self will someday admit that you are. I'm going for the articles.

This Friday, the careening snowball of Rock n Roll and high fives picks up momentum as What Cheer? Brigade celebrates their fifth birthday. Cakes, greeting cards, and unpitched percussion encouraged. Rounding out the festivities are neat guy Jacob the Terrible, my-very-favorite-rock-band Arcing, and Veveritse. Saturday, in keeping with our apparently newfound tradition, encompasses a host of events so densely packed with intrigue and awesomeness that one questions their heretofore conception of mass. You know how you can fill a jar to the brim with marbles, but there's still room for a cup of sand? Then you think its really packed, but can still add 16 ounces of water? Starting at noon, an all afternoon youth-run collaborative extravaganza, Roots and Rituals, will present workshops about improv, laser cutting, and dance, as well as a Youth Arts Panel discussion at 2 and a slew of performative showcases. Simultaneously in the bar area, our weekly Irish Jam Sesh will provide the soundtrack to "The Best Day of Your Life." Ice cold cocktails! Outdoor seating! Not rain! Who knew? Between 1 and 3, we'll be hosting an open house of our brand-spanking-new Mercantile Building. Picturesque live/work studios! Practice spaces with real locks, and bathrooms you aren't terrified of! Sunday promises a mellow yet riveting chill-fest with haunting acoustic squad Allysen Callery & The Land of Nod, Paul Metzger, Amen Dunes, and Anikki Dawn & The Demons. Shhhhh. AND now, as Monty Python would offer, for Something Completely Different, Monday evening in the darkroom resident photo wizard Denny Moers will unlock the secrets of his signature and quasi-accidental developing processes. A Week of Wonder at the AS220

Rise and shine, readers! Get off your tuckus and out into that balmy New England Spring. Or, more specifically, into a dark secluded venue in Providence's lush downcity. Those UV rays are overrated, and will only serve to rob you of your vampiric charm. Besides, your iPhone is giving off enough vitamin D to last you a lifetime. Right? Right.

Tonight grants us the show that we've all been waiting for: B Sharp bestows upon us Olneyville favorites Atlantic Thrills and Los Monos Locos. Muy Bien! Tomorrow promises a non-stop 12 hours of glitter encrusted magic, as well. The party starts at 2pm with Providence "Freedom Summer 2010" Kickball signups. Anybody remember "Breakup Summer 2007"? It'll be like that, but with less tears and more head injuries. Hang in the bar for our weekly Irish Music Session starting at 4, and the sweet Think Outside the Bomb tour at 5. This puppy's going down on a sliding scale of $3-5, and will take the form of a presentation and open dialogue around the intersectionality between nuclear abolition and other struggles for social and environmental justice, anti-war, etc. Rumor has it some rock n roll will also be involved. The party doesn't end there, though. Come 9:30 pm we're firing up an experimental film fest made on the cheap. Fear not, society maidens; its still got class. Lunchfilms indeed. Were I to pick but one winner as the weekdays roll on, I'd be loath to miss Thursday evening's BSS Elementary Showcase. Those gals keep it funky, people, and the dudes aren't bad either. Check out what our youth program does and what beat-making actually looks like. (Ahem. Timbaland? Anybody?) If by some horrifying shortcoming of God or Nature sick beats aren't your thing, give it till 9 that night: punk lives again with The Network, Abominable Iron Sloth, and Jesuscentric add up to a show you won't bring home to mama. Just remember to call her on Mother's Day, will you?

James has a rad new day-glo print that he just finished in Chicago. CLICK to buy it.

The print will be an 8-color 21 x 27" dayglo Blacklight poster depicting the full-on rural bad acid-trip experience. It's the perfect addition to any wood-paneled basement hideaway and will look great over that cat-urine soaked couch. It will be a run-size of 150 and available for the low price of $30.

As some of you may or may not know, I've had some problems for the past couple years, among them is that I've been without a print shop for some time now and it's put a serious dent in getting any prints produced. It's been a nightmare.

Now my dream is coming true. For the first time in 2.5 years I'll be producing an art print again with the help of the very talented Daniel MacAdam of Crosshair while I'm in Chicago next week for Version Festival. I'm curating a show called "Unearthed Americana" at the LVL3 Gallery hArts for Haiti 4/17/10 : LVL3, opening on April 28th. This print will be part of the show which includes 12 other artists band promises to be very interesting.

Dan has been very gracious to offer his studio to me and help with producing this print and it's an amazing testament to the power of Gigposters.com to bring artists together in collaboration to help each other out. This site launched my career as an artist and the folks who have been here from the start were some of the first people out there to give me the confidence to get my work out there. Thank you.

If you'd like to help me out, the prints will be available for $30 each and will be available at the end of next week in the classifieds section. I will have a limited number available then when I return from Chicago.

Enchanté, readers! How goes the tangible reality? Here in the blogosphere we're reading a balmy 75 degrees, though at the rate YouTube keeps adding Lady Gaga videos, its about to get alot hotter. Can you handle it, show-goers? We'll wait and see. Is that a challenge? YOU BET IT IS!

I've spent the afternoon getting jacked up on double-caff Folgers and hyperventilating into a brown paper bag in preparation for tomorrow night's anticipated happening. It's been in my Blackberry for months, people, and the moment is finally nigh. Derek Holzer/TONEWHEELS, Black Pus, Humanbeast, and Shawn Greenlee are poised to lay siege to our senses in but a short 24 hours. With the promise of proactive treason, marital eroticism, horrifying drawings of blood, and untold varieties of aural assault, this ain't your mamas noise show. Be there, or possibly have some hope of decent hearing for the rest of your life. (Wait, does that even rhyme?) Also premiering that night is our fabulous new late Spring "Is It Summer Yet?" menu. (Littlenecks with asparagus, anyone? Vegan Rueben?) Sunday afternoon, get casual and saunter downtown for a free-of-charge May gallery opening. Featured this month is nicest person around town and no-longer secretly incredible artist Corey Grayhorse. Also for show and sale are some awesomely shiny and religiously themed works by Alicia Perez, new work by Andrew Gunnar Norquist, and books by children of the Fox Point Community Library. Stick around for an uncomfortably raunchy Empire Review, during which Keith Munslow will continue to tightrope the creepy/debonaire line via having promised to "get wet." Um, really? We're also having a special open Monday for crooning protestors Detroit Rebellion, Joe Fletcher, and Gregory and the Hawk. Fast forward through a thrilling week of cottage industry classes, and bring it all home next Friday for a "very special" B Sharp Presents. Rearing to go are Los Monos Locos and... are you ready? Here we are again, readers. The womb-like pleasantness of the blogosphere numbs us not, but rather enables our lucidity and heightens our awareness of the surrounding environs and weekly happenings. While downcity has, of late, been the site of flash floods, drunken brawls, riots surrounding iced coffee, a couple of interesting incidences involving fireworks and proto-farmers markets, innumerable baffling interpersonal interactions, and one quasi-sensual critical mass, let us focus our attention on one western corner known to its devotees as the Artist's Space 220. We've got an epic week lined up, and I heard Meredith baked cookies.

Did anyone else forget to celebrate Earth Day until the 9 p.m. Bono tribute specials ran on cable? No big D, hippies; there's time to go green yet. Sunday night, local Aveda mavens Kim and Courtney host Clean Water Makes Noise, a glimmering extravaganza featuring the musical stylings of local legends I Destroyer, Chrome Jackson, and Holy Sheet. The $6-10 sliding scale cover goes right to Potomac Conservancy, and scores you not only access to a dazzling array of bands, but also a fantastic raffle spotlighting contributions from such local business as The Red Fez, Nick-a-nees, McGinnis Tattoo, E&O, Seven Stars Bakery, White Electric, Julians, Legend Bicycle, Second Time Around, A Pleasant Surprise, The Coffee Exchange, Into the Wardrobe, and Narragansett Brewery. Jigga WHA?! Pass the hemp paper and India ink. I'm signing up. Tuesday evening marks a divergence with a night of hilarity via the comedic stylings of Ahmed Bharoocha, Tim Vargulish, and Michael Wilbur. I've been practicing my heckling, and I think its pretty clear its a term of endearment. Right? Don't be afraid to rest up before Friday; I'm canceling my Saturday brunch plans, because this show might kill me: Derek Holzer (Germany)/TONEWHEELS, Black Pus, humanbeast, and Shawn Greenlee take over Providence and our stage in a calculated attempt to destroy our ears, enliven our spirits, and generally raise hell. Avante garde? Yes. Assaultive? Sure. Unparalleled? Absolutely. I'll be the one up front wearing razor-blades and earplugs.

I hope you're all sitting down, because the frenzied diatribe about to ensue is fueled by an ardor so hyper-zealous, so intensely fervent, so borderline maniacal, as to dangerously teeter on the brink of irrationality were it not so solidly rooted in authenticity and quantifiable righteousness. The upcoming happenings are not only close to my own heart and investments, but exemplify empirically radical qualities, the combining of which can only be described as a "Recipe for Awesome." Friday night kicks off with your favorite and mine, members of Made in Mexico/Wishing Wells/Arab on Radar/What-Have-You, much anticipated Cumbia all-stars Jamazon. They'll warm it up for Major Stars and (tah-dah!!!!) Sightings. But a short 24 hours after, experimental "Biennial-Makers" Peter Glantz, Blevin Blectum, Amil Byleckie and so many more unleash an audio-visual immersion so staggeringly contemporary that the avante-films of your past will be relegated to the company of steam engines, push mowers, Apple 2Es, and Friendster. Saturday morning also marks the first session of our week long 3 part large format photography class. Old-timey! DIY! Steam Punk! Limited room is still available, so get on the locomotive stat by reserving a spot via our AS220 online shop. If the chemicals don't kill you, come back Monday night for an extra special hotbed of sin and iniquity with the touring phenomenon that would be Pitchfork darlings, if only they'd drop the swearing and loose the Iggy Pop style feminism. The Coathangers guarantee the poppiest man-hating we've had the pleasure of enjoying since the Bombettes, and team up with 3D Mystery and Glowkid. Can the madness possibly end there?! NEVER! Wednesday night marks our Susperia-esque descent into electronic psychedelia via Daniel Ephram (The Heartland!), Sky Jelly, GB PKA GÃteaux Blasters (Switzerland), and Bixit. Thursday, though, we've got a show that you won't be afraid to bring home to mom: Brown Bird, A Weather, and Lis Isenberg bring back sweeping revival Americana. Now thats something we can both enjoy!

We're at it again, readers. Down here at the Artist's Space Two Twenty, we've got a slew of awesome-encrusted happenings so bejeweled with radicalism and modernity I dare not look directly into their light. If good times are rhinestones, then I'm Liberace. Get out your Windex and newsprint like your mama taught you; I want to see my face in this one.

Tonight's goings on are as dazzling as they are imminent. AS220's much anticipated (as Facebook tells me) Jukebox goes live in but a mere matter of moments. If your all local and ever original tunes aren't up there yet, get crackin! Cruise on by the bar tonight to experience the greatest hits of Diego Perez, Shawn Greenlee, Diana Joy, Diego Perez,The Edens Experience, Soul Control, Megasus, and so many more. I'm sticking around after for an au courant film and performance art experience via UnSaddest Factory Theatre. Head home after to pop those black jeans in the dryer until Saturday night: Thou, Elder, Black Pyramid, and Kintaan remind us that Pure Evil hasn't lost its spunk. Sick stuff, people, and I'm not talking about chicken soup. Sunday night trades in unholy darkness for black comedy when The Empire Review returns to our stage. Racy! (Learn from my mistakes, readers: don't sit next to your parents. It gets awkward.) It doesn't end there! Monday night invokes a mystical immersion as traveling gypsies create semi-improvisational soundtracks to experimental films via analog synths, electronic hardware, and acoustic accompaniment. Steve Jobe & Rachel Miller are joined by the Jack Curtis Dubowsky Ensemble, as well as Jacob Haller. I'll pitch this out, too: Tuesday at noon we're hosting an Anarchist Luncheon. We'll provide the tea sandwiches and crudites if you bring the not-burning-the-place-down. Deal? Topic of convo includes "We Are an Image from the Future: the Greek Revolt of December 2008." Shake it all off Wednesday night with Daniel Francis Doyle, Divets, Math The Band 8-bit Visual Set, and Global Crash. Sexy Mustard. Right? Right!

AS220 Kills It Dead, Week of Easter

Here's the d, team. Reba here, from such entities as Rock n Roll, Stuff Around Town, and AS220. I've been graciously invited by my favorite moderator and yours to share with LOTSOFNOISE the weekly happs at the AS2000, which I regularly email to a couple thousand of my closest friends. Looking forward to seeing you here in the blogosphere every Thursday from now on, as well as at shows probably every night this weekend. (Hey Schneider- each of my posts to the front page count for 10 of yours in the forums. I'll see your 1,023 in Hell!) Here it is, folks: The story downtown this week:

Readers, brace yourselves. Its about to get real. Your Auntie Reba isn't one to throw around superlatives willy-nilly, but the upcoming week at AS220 is so riveting, so profoundly myriad and great, so encrusted in blood and glitter, and so close to my own heart that I find myself incapable of maintaining my characteristic stolid and icily professional disengagement from the matters at hand. For those taking notes, mark these as the headers: "Week of 4/1: Armageddon Becomes a Reality; All of Reba's Bands Play/Resurrection Never Felt So Good; AS220 Foils The Man/Builds Android/Kicks Out The Jams; Performance Art Makes a Comeback/Punkers and Hippies Rejoice."

On to the gritty: This Friday is going to be a firestorm of awesomeness. Armageddon is nigh, and it may be the best one yet. The Bombettes join us from Sweden to remind us that other peoples can be far more hardcore, and far more attractive than ourselves. Providence supergroup Arcing precedes them (Don't stand too close to those riffs! They're sharp!) as well as my personal heroes, Butcherings. Blood Sacrifice will open. What they lack in a MySpace page they make up for in sensory immersion. The following evening offers something entirely divergent: AS220 March Artist in Residence Hana van der Kolk presents a series of choreographed movement sequences exploring the dynamics, relationships, and personal histories of particular duos. "The Third Thing," starting at 6 pm for exactly zero dollars, will feature such favored Providence teams as Andrew Oesch and Susan Sakash, and Human Beast/marriage collaborators Maralie Armstrong and Eli Milholland. Believe me when I relate to you, readers, that after stopping by a brief rehearsal of this project, your Auntie Reba was thrown into an existential tailspin, bike rode home crying, and was forced to read her own tarot desperately seeking answers to the debilitating questions of cosmic isolation for over two hours. Thats a true story. Do not miss this performance. Right around the corner is Easter Sunday, and to celebrate, we've decided to resurrect mind-blowing rock shows. Rock isn't Dead; It Is Risen! Not only is this evening conducive to festive floral semi-formal wear, but also promises a host of phenomenal acts: Bellows heads it up, and they've hinted that show-goers may want to bring their hymnals for sing-a-longs. You'll want it, after Holy Sheet. I've yet to find anything to get their stains out, but I've heard that baking soda works... Dadaist mathers Normal Love is making the trek from Philly, and it's no wonder: with newish Providence resident/other worldly expatriate performative humorist Diana Joy sharing her rousing accordion break-up songs, gothic sound-scapes, and glistening grill, who could miss this show? Not I, for I've weaseled my own way onto the bill! The triumphant debut of Whore Paint is imminent! As though this holiday extravaganza could not get more epic, Xander Marro has graciously agreed to screen her first and most adorably themed film, "The Bunny Movie." Egg hunt still pending. Don't think for a second that the magic ends there. Tuesday night promises more devastatingly good looking European punkers, as posh Frenchman Gunslingers join Lifers and Psonen.

"Reba," you're surely saying, "the madness must stop there. After that sort of weekend, how could AS220 possibly seek to top their own best?" I'll tell you how, readers. Thursday evening, we unveil the answer to all of our prayers and yours. Our crack team of computer nerds and rockers, after months of work underground in a top secret bunker, have emerged with AS220's finest work of fabrication to date: the AS220 Jukebox! We're super proud of this, team, and soon you will be too. Here's the deal: We need some hot jams to play in our bar, and you know we love to keep it ASCAP free. Through our digital Jukebox, all of you local players/screamers/crooners can upload your jams and get them played, and an endless stream of drinkers and show-goers can bask in the warm glow of your righteous licks. Come out and join us Thursday, March 25th at 7pm at the Rochambeau Library in Providence, RI to celebrate the life of legendary local sci-fi and horror writer H.P. Lovecraft!

We'll be having a FREE, public showing of the 2005 black and white, silent version of "The Call of Cthulhu" directed by Andrew Lehman of the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. Certainly one of, if not THE, best and most faithful film adaptations of a Lovecraft story yet!

I just stumbled upon this band and their myspace while randomly clicking on listing links in the listings page. A brother and sister combo (truthfully? I have heard that one before so I am not 100 percent sold yet) that swap instruments through the entire set and sometimes throughout a song. The sound is sorta Kills meets Cars...sorta. On top of all that...they are from Providence. Somehow I have managed to not see or hear these guys yet but I am intrigued. I am guessing that I overlooked their and due to the similarity of their name to the plethora of "-ity" death metal bands. Anyway, They have a show in Feb at AS220.
I found this video kind of fun. It is like an 80's Hall and Oates video gone gnarly. Not safe for work or kiddies due to the pile of fake murder.

Also, this weekend has these two shows (same night). I will sadly only be able to make one for obvious reasons.

Resources for Human Development (RHD) is sponsoring a "gigantic" benefit
concert at the Blackstone (Hope Artiste village, Pawtucket) on January 23.
2010. We are calling it THUNDER IN THE BUCKET. Doors open at 4:00pm. Music to start at 4:30pm. RHD is a non profit, arts based program that provides services and art instruction to people with disabilities. RHD specializes in providing opportunities
for people to experience the full majesty and glory of rock n roll music. RHD teaches people how to make their own songs, bands, cds, and videos. RHD
finds ways for people to make their own music who never thought they could.

14 bands will be playing on the 23rd. Half the bands will feature people supported by RHD. They include :
+Mrs Six Eyes (featuring Amy Ethier and other legendary PVD musicians like Alec K Redfearn, Mark Stone,and Paul "Pip" Everett)
+Half Man/ Half Human (featuring Jahnoy Skerrit)
+The Flying Snitches (featuring Jeremy Lahousse)
+On Fire (featuring Diane Parenteau and Nathan Harrop)

The other bands include staff members at RHD. They are:

The Girls Rock Camp Alliance (GRCA) "provides resources and networking opportunities for its affiliate camps, and promotes the establishment of like-minded institutions worldwide". Notably, the GRCA holds an annual conference for all girls rock camps around the country and around the world to meet up and talk about girls rock camp best practices. It's pretty rad. But they need money to put on this conference, so it's a huge help to both GRR! and camps all over the place if you can attend this awesome benefit show. It's at AS220. It's featuring The Ram (with Jenn and Jeannette from the GRR! Planning Committee), Blood Sacrifice (featuring Reba from Made in Mexico who is also one of our vocal instructors, and Chip from the Body), and the first ever performance of the Assembly of Light Women's Choir, run by Chrissy Wolpert (from Bonedust and Dr. F Yeah-- also one of our vocal instructors) which features local lady rockers, and even a few former Ladies Rock Campers! Sure to be a great time, and of course, it's a great cause. See you there!

Lotsofnoise poster "robgaloshes" wrote a LISTINGS parser that takes all of the the info from the LISTINGS page and reformats it in a super friendly Iphone interface. Not truly an "app" in that it is launched from a site and not bought via apple...but you would never know that using it. It is still being improved but it is already awesome for any of you with Iphones.
